Henry Thoreau writings in Walden reflect his reflections on modernity and industrialization. Thoreau specifically focuses on representing the damages or the negative effects of modernity in ordinary lives. He writes, “Our life is frittered away by detail.” Apart from depicting his reflections against modernity, Thoreau also recounts his personal decisions of isolating himself in the woods to live as he states “deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life”. In all, the reflections of Thoreau in Walden deal with a man living on the verge of a changing world, a world which was advancing in all areas of life including technology and communications (he writes of the invention of tunnels, telegraph and newspapers as being .........

He places particular importance to the soil of the earth, calling it the “framework of the globe”. Revealing how human life and all life is inevitably link to the soil of the earth stating, “Out of it we came and unto it we return”.

In the movie Into the Wild the main character Chris McCandless is confronted with the alienation of the world he once knew when he leaves it behind in search for himself. In the journey that will end in Alaska, Chris will meet people that ultimately help in his understanding the deeper meanings of life.
In this paper I will discuss the symbolism used by the director Sean Penn on a specific scene on the movie, which I believed, is intended to represent Chris connections with society......

But how can an empire sitting in the middle of the desert archive such splendor and wealth that challenge any ancient Greek city? The answer is the Nile River. This river was subject of extreme symbolism to the Egyptian for thousand of years until this very day......
